ISTA certification from the Flatz laboratory: Drop test, climate test, vibration test and box compression test.

The ISTA processes are designed to test the durability and protection of packaged products during transportation. In the Flatz ISTA laboratories, we simulate various conditions that may occur during transit; these include impacts, vibrations, pressure, or changes in climate.

The aim is to ensure that the products pass through the supply chain unscathed – to minimize any transport damage and increase the level of customer satisfaction.

Meet the high standards that many shipping agents like Amazon demand. We will be happy to carry out the 6-AMAZON.com-SIOC type A validation test on your behalf.

Climate test

  • Simulation of the impact of different temperatures and levels of humidity
  • Load tests based on individual specifications from -40°C to +180°C and a humidity level of 10% to 85%
  • Up to a size of 1400 x 950 x 1700 mm (L x W x H)
  • Load of up to 500 kg

Vibration test

  • Simulation of the impact of vibration and impact loads
  • Maximum surface area: 1200 x 1200 mm
  • Theoretical maximum weight 250 kg. The maximum weight depends on the test procedure and must be calculated accordingly

Drop test

  • Drop tests from defined heights to simulate impact loads on corners and edges, for example
  • For preventing any transport damage or incorrect handling
  • Heights ranging from 310 mm to 1810 mm
  • Maximum weight: 60 kg

Box compression test (BCT)

  • Determination of vertical compression resistance in accordance with DIN 55440-1
  • Maximum dimensions: 1000 x 600 x 850 mm (L x W x H).
  • Maximum effective force: 18 kN
  • Maximum bearing load: 150 kg.

Overview:

ISTA Series 1: Non-Simulation Tests

The non-simulation-based performance testing challenges the robustness of the product and packaging combination. This is useful as a screening test, but is not designed to simulate environmental influences.

ISTA Series 2: Partial Simulation Tests

Series 2 tests are partial simulation performance tests which, in addition to Series 1 (Non-Simulation Tests), also comprise at least one element of Series 3 (General Simulation Tests). For example, they may comprise atmospheric conditioning or random vibration.

ISTA-Serie 3: General Simulation Tests

Series 3 are general simulation tests that are designed to allow simulation of the damage-producing motions, forces, conditions, and sequences of transport environments. Their features include different drop heights, random vibrations or atmospheric conditions such as wet tropical conditions or winter.

ISTA-Serie 6: Member Performance Tests

The performance test for members. Developed to reflect supply chain elements of Global 500 retailers or carriers. (Example of Amazon) The tests may be completely original or may be modifications or variations of ISTA procedures or projects or other published and accepted tests.

ISTA-Serie 7: Development Tests

ISTA Series 7 tests are used in the development of transport packages by comparing the relative performance of two or more container designs. But they are not intended to evaluate the protection given to the packaged products.

FAQ

The ISTA certification guarantees that our packaging has undergone strict tests to ensure the safety and integrity of products during transportation. This is crucial for minimizing damage and ensuring customer satisfaction.

We carry out a wide range of ISTA tests, including 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1G, 1H, 2A, 2B, 2C, 3A, 3B, 3F, 3L-Small, 3L-A, 3L-B, 3L-D, 3L-G, 3L-H, 6-AMAZON.com-Over Boxing, 6-AMAZON.com-SIOC Type A, 6-AMAZON.com-SIOC Type B, 6-AMAZON.com-SIOC Type D, 6-AMAZON.com-SIOC Type G, 6-AMAZON.com-SIOC Type H, 6-FedEx-A, 6-SAMSCLUB, 7D

ISTA Series 7: Development Tests

ISTA Series 7 tests are used in the development of transport packages by comparing the relative performance of two or more container designs. But they are not intended to evaluate the protection given to the packaged products.

Products that are shipped in ISTA-tested packaging benefit from increased safety during transport, which results in less damage, fewer returns and costs associated with this, and also boosts brand loyalty.

Although not all products require ISTA certification, many large retailers and e-commerce platforms like Amazon demand it to reduce the level of damage to products and improve the level of customer satisfaction.

When you choose our ISTA-compliant packaging tests, you can rest assured that your packaging solutions have been designed perfectly to meet the strict ISTA standards for safe transit.

ISTA Series I comprises non-simulation integrity tests that test the robustness of the packaging, while ISTA Series 3 offers more extensive simulation tests that replicate various transit environments.

If packaging fails the ISTA test, we offer detailed analyses and recommendations on how to improve the packaging solution to meet the standards.

Packaging should be retested whenever there is a significant change to the design or content or if there are any changes in the supply chain or mode of transport.
